Gingivitis
Treatment for gum disease is dependent on the stage of the disease. Gingivitis is a reversible gum disease that typically shows up as red, puffy gums. It can be easily treated with a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup. It is important to practice good oral hygiene at home to keep your gums healthy!
Periodontitis
If gingivitis goes untreated, it may progress to periodontitis which is a more advanced stage of gum disease because it affects the underlying bone. Scaling and root planing is the most common treatment for periodontitis and includes cleaning the teeth above and below the gum line using ultrasonic scaling instruments and hand instruments. It is a conservative treatment that does not require surgery. Advanced cases of periodontal disease may require gum surgery if the tissue cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatment alone.
